4th Annual BIG SWIM
Cape Jourimain, NB to Borden-Carleton, PE
Sunday, August 17, 2014
GIVETOLIVE is thrilled to announce that the BIG SWIM is back! Up to 50 swimmers will enter the waters on Sunday, August 17, 2014 to attempt an epic feat – swimming across the Northumberland Strait from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. The training will be demanding and fundraising might put you out of your comfort zone but we guarantee that the feeling of stepping out of the water in PEI is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You don’t want to miss this opportunity!
As of April 2, 2014 the 2014 BIG SWIM is SOLD OUT! Please email canadian pharmacy for viagra if you wish to be placed on a wait list for any spots that may open up. The registration fee is $150 and includes an event swim cap, event t-shirt, pre-swim dinner on Saturday night and safety boat support on the water.
The BIG SWIM is a 14-17 km swim across open water. The course generally follows the Confederation Bridge but each swimmers route will be unique due to tides, currents and swim pace. If you’re not used to swimming in the ocean, you’ll have to prepare yourself for salt water, tides and currents, choppy water and for swimming far from shore. In previous years, participants organized group training swims in lakes and open water to practice – we recommend this!
While the BIG SWIM is a big challenge, it is totally achievable if you train for it. Training tips and guidelines will be made available at a later date but a dedicated participant can train up for this event. Some of the past participants were new to swimming prior to registering for the BIG SWIM – it can be done! Many of past participants have a swimming background and use the event as a way to reignite their love of the sport.
Fundraising from the 2014 BIG SWIM will support best place to buy viagra online yahoo answers. Located on Aylesford Lake, Brigadoon Village gives a summer camp experience to children, youth and families living with chronic illness or special needs. Every $1,000 raised sends a child to camp for one week and we want to send lots of campers to Brigadoon! Each swimmer will fundraise a minimum of $1,000.
Support kayakers are key to the success of the BIG SWIM. Each swimmer needs to identify a qualified kayaker to accompany them on their swim. The kayaker provides a lifeline for the swimmer: food, water, moral support and safety support. This is a critical part of the BIG SWIM safety plan, so GIVETOLIVE will assess the qualifications of each kayaker before they are approved to be your partner. They will be contacted by our kayak manager to discuss their experience in detail. Here are the basic requirements:
- Previous open water/ocean kayaking experience. Must be comfortable in a kayak in variable conditions for 3-8 hours.
- Access to an approved/sea worthy sea kayak (14-15+ ft). The deck hatches must be water tight, which can be an issue with older kayaks.
- Access to required safety gear (full list TBA, includes: sea kayak, paddle and extra paddle, deck compass, PFD and an extra PFD, throw line, whistle, skirt, dry bags for your gear, water pump).
- Available on August 17 and 18 (weather back-up day for the swim).
A successful BIG SWIM requires lots of event volunteers. From registration, to beach support, to support on the water, each part of the BIG SWIM weekend requires volunteers. If you are available on August 16 through 18 (for all or part of the time), please email canadian pharmacy for viagra to register.
